Tulip Time 2020 Public Art Project Klompen Garden Winner Announced

HOLLAND, Mich., February 13, 2020 – Tulip Time Festival (www.tuliptime.com) is pleased to announce Jerry and Karyn Klukos and their work, “To Grandpa with Love” as the 2nd annual juried winner of the 2020 Public Art Project: Klompen Garden.

The announcement was made February 7 at the First Bloem Celebration of the Visual Arts event held at the Holland Civic Center. Festival sponsors, artists, art lovers, and members of the public attended the event where the evening began with a reception honoring the Top 20 Festival Artwork and Public Art Project Artists.

This was the second year the festival chose Klompen Garden as the public art project. This year’s submissions were reviewed by John Berry, former Vice President of Corporate Communications at Herman Miller, who designated the Top 20 from which the winning piece was selected.

This year’s winning artists are Jerry and Karyn Klukos of Fennville, Michigan. Their design was inspired by Karyn’s grandfather, a longtime resident of the area and avid roller-skater. His love for Tulip Time and his longtime hobby were joined in the creation of his one-of-a-kind klompen-rolschaatsen! For many years, he skated through the streets dressed in full Dutch Costume. The Klukos’ submission is a replica of his skates, with the addition the hand-painted De Zwaan windmills on the front of each shoe.

Jerry and Karyn have two sons, a daughter, and a baby due this spring.

“To Grandpa With Love,” will be on display at the Holland Area Arts Council from May 2 through May 10, 2020. The 19 remaining klompen will be displayed at Window on the Waterfront and compete for the Viewers’ Choice Awards. The top three pieces with the most votes will win cash prizes. The community and all visitors are invited to participate by casting their vote for their favorite artwork. The winners of the Viewers’ Choice Awards will be announced on Saturday, May 9, 2020 at 11a via Facebook Live.
