Tulip Time Festival Announces 2022 Tulip Time Poster Winner

Kate Moynihan and her painting “Bursting with Color” were chosen as the 2022 Tulip Time poster. Her oil depiction of a bright, multi-colored tulip shows the beauty and diversity of, not just Holland’s flowers, but of Holland’s people.
Moynihan was announced as the winner at the First Bloem event, Thursday evening at Warehouse 6 by Gwen Auwerda, Executive Director of Tulip Time Festival.
This is Moynihan’s first year as the competition winner and her second year as the artist behind the official Tulip Time poster artwork. Moynihan was commissioned to provide a piece in 2004, before the emergence of the competition.
"We are thrilled with this year's artwork. The piece is vibrant and reminds us that spring Is around the corner," says Gwen Auwerda.
Over 100 pieces were entered into the competition. These 100 reflected some of the most diverse set of art the festival has seen to date in both theme and style. Those 100 entries were narrowed down to a Top 20 selected by juror Mary Sundstrom. The winning piece was selected from the Top 20, all of whom were present with their works of art on display at the First Bloem event.
For the 2021 festival year, Tulip Time paused the competition to commission a piece by Aron Lowe, the previous years winner. Lowe was not able to celebrate her win from the previous year because the festival was cancelled due to COVID.
Copies of Moynihan’s work will be available for sale at the Tulip Time Festival Office at 42 W 8th St., downtown Holland, and also on the Tulip Time website at https://store.tuliptime.com/. Other merchandise and souvenirs based on the “Bursting with Color” painting will also be available.
Kate Moynihan has been a professional painter for 25 years. By combining her first career as a registered nurse with an art degree, Kate uses color theory to provide art that energizes.
Kate applies thick layers of oil paint in a loose style creating texture that engages the viewer longer. This love of texture transfers into other medias such as acrylic and collage.
Being a Michigan native, Kate paints regional water shoreline scenes and woodland landscapes. Her signature motif Is the white birch, using its symbolism when she penned her memoir, A Lone Birch, My Artistic Journey.
Recently, Kate retired from being the owner of Moynihan Gallery and Framing, on Eighth Street, in downtown Holland, Michigan after 25 years.
