Step Into Tradition: Tulip Time Festival's Dutch Dance Program Marks 90 Years of Cultural Celebration

This spring, Tulip Time Festival invites Tulip Time enthusiasts, from third grade through adults, to slip into their wooden shoes and participate in a treasured tradition: the 90th anniversary of the Dutch Dance program. A cornerstone of the festival, Dutch Dance offers participants a chance to celebrate Holland’s rich Dutch heritage and connect with the community through lively folk dances performed in authentic costumes.

“Dutch Dance has been at the heart of Tulip Time since we started dancing in 1935, and it continues to be one of the most beloved experiences of the festival,” said Gwen Auwerda, Executive Director of Tulip Time. “It’s not just a performance—it’s a way to share our city’s story and history with the world.”

Each year, over 800 dancers bring the magic of Dutch traditions to life, embodying the spirit of Holland, Michigan, while honoring its Dutch founders. This milestone year is an extraordinary opportunity for students to become part of the legacy while experiencing the camaraderie and joy of being a part of this cherished tradition.

“Whether you’re a seasoned dancer or brand new to the stage, we welcome students of all experience levels to join us,” said Jenn Ryckbost, Dutch Dance Program Director. “This program is not just about learning a dance—it’s about stepping into a piece of history and sharing that with an audience who truly appreciates it.”

Ryckbost told us about the impact Dutch Dance has on local families. “Last year, as Dutch Costume Directors, we were fortunate to participate in Personal Shopping Appointments with the dancers receiving new costumes. During these sessions, we witnessed heartwarming interactions among family members, dancers, and the Dutch Dance Directors. It was a joy to inform the dancers that Tulip Time’s Join the Dance Fund would generously cover most, if not all, of the expenses for their fabrics at Field’s Fabrics and their Notion Kit.

“One memorable moment at Field’s Fabrics involved a high school student and her father, who were new to fabric stores and feeling a bit overwhelmed. With the assistance of a Costume Director, the student had her measurements taken and received guidance on choosing the fabrics for her costume.

“As they waited for the fabrics to be cut and paid for, I had the pleasure of informing them that the entire cost of the dancer’s fabrics and notion kit would be covered by Tulip Time’s Join the Dance Fund. The father and daughter were deeply moved and expressed their gratitude through tears upon hearing this news, as they had been prepared to make sacrifices to cover the costume expenses. Sharing this support with them was a heartwarming experience, and this story is just one of many where dancers received assistance through the fund this year.”

Participants will have the chance to perform for thousands of festival attendees and become ambassadors of Holland’s cultural heritage. Registration is now open, and practices begin in January.
